HOW TO HELP OUR VETERINARY COMMUNITY RECOVER
Veterinary Volunteers
We are thankful for all the offers to help people and animals in Western North Carolina in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene. We are working with state officials to coordinate help and reduce unnecessary traffic in an area that is still in search and rescue mode. If you are interested in helping, please fill out this form: Volunteer Form
Monetary Donations
You can help veterinarians, staff and animals recover by donating to the Friends of NCVMA Foundation. Indicate Disaster Relief in the funding area to ensure money goes to help those affected by recent disasters in North Carolina on the coast and in the mountains. Large Animal Assistance
The NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is helping to connect farmers who have lost their feed supply during the disaster with others who have hay or feed to donate. If you have a need or are able to assist livestock producers through housing animals and/or providing feed or supplies, please complete this form: 2024 Hurricane Helene Livestock Assistance Form

WHAT’S THE SITUATION?
Status of WNC Veterinary Facilities
We are using a list of veterinary facilities in the affected counties provided by the NCVMB and are updating the status of facilities as we get word. This is a work in progress as a service and we are trying to keep it as updated as possible despite the difficulty communicating with many shelters. We recommend contacting a clinic before traveling to ensure they are open as the situation of a facility can change very quickly: WNC Veterinary Facilities NCVMA Status List
NCVMB Pharmacy Guidance on General Maintenance Prescriptions
General maintenance prescriptions for animals under the care of a veterinarian located in the disaster area may be refilled at any veterinary facility under the following conditions:
This does not apply to controlled substance medications.
- The veterinarian refilling the prescription has the discretion to refill the prescription or not.
- The person presenting the prescription must provide proof that the medication has refills available.
- The facility refilling the prescription should keep detailed documentation.
- The facility refilling the prescription must notify the prescriber that a refill has been done. (Recommend email)
RESOURCES
NCVMA Disaster Relief Grants
This grant program is directed towards NCVMA members who own a practice (hospital or mobile unit) affected by a natural disaster/catastrophic event. While these hospitals or mobile units are covered by insurance, we know that this insurance does not cover everything, and comes with a deductible to be paid. To alleviate some of the stress of recovery, NCVMA has developed this grant program to help pay the insurance deductible.
Friends of NCVMA Disaster Grants
We are currently soliciting funds to provide a broader-based grant for those in the veterinary community to recover from this storm. Guidelines will be developed and announced soon.
AVMF Disaster relief grants
Veterinarians and veterinary students impacted by a disaster can apply for disaster relief grants through the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF). Grants are intended to cover out-of-pocket expenses for basic necessities incurred as a result of a disaster.
AVMA Disaster reimbursement grants
AVMA member veterinarians providing rescue and emergency care to animals in a disaster may apply for disaster reimbursement grants—up to $5,000 per grantee awarded by the AVMF.
