The NCVMA Board of Directors elected a new slate of officers at the June board meeting. The officers were installed at a ceremony at the Summer Conference.

  • Karyn Smith, DVM, of Wilmington was installed as President
    • Dr. Karyn Smith is a native North Carolinian, Navy veteran and former emergency nurse. She is a 2006 grad of NC State’s College of Veterinary Medicine and has practiced small animal medicine in Wilmington  and Pinehurst, NC, with some experience in shelter medicine and working dog medicine. Dr. Smith recently finished her MPH so has shifted her focus to public health and animal welfare. She enjoys spending time with her amazing husband as well as extended family and friends. She is a true crime junkie and country music fan. In the Summertime, she loves hanging out at her pool and always adores hanging out with her two pups (1 Pit bull and 1 Yorkie mix). She and her husband also enjoy traveling to the Caribbean and would love to retire there someday.
  • Paige Harrington, DVM, of Greenville is serving as President-Elect
    • Dr. Paige Harrington was Phi Beta Kappa at NCSU while earning her bachelor’s degree in Zoology. She earned her DVM from NC State’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She serves as an NCVMA representative on the NCSU CVM Admissions Committee. After an internship in Charleston, SC, Dr. Harrington joined a growing ER-Specialty practice in Wilmington working there for seven years. She moved to Greenville when her husband started graduate school at ECU joining the Pet Emergency Clinic, now Points East Veterinary Emergency Hospital of Greenville, in 2012. Dr. Harrington has worked with Vets Pets as the Medical Director of Emergency & Referral Services since 2016. She works with the teams of Points East Veterinary Emergency Hospital of Fayetteville, Points East Veterinary Emergency Hospital of Greenville, and Points East Veterinary Specialty Hospital in Wilson. Dr. Harrington enjoys hiking, camping, and spending time at the beach with her husband and two children.
  • Brian Stuber, DVM, of Goldsboro is Vice President
    • Dr Stuber was born and raised in Louisville, KY. Graduated both undergrad and Vet School from Auburn University and moved to NC after graduating in 1994. He is one of two partners at Berkeley Veterinary Clinic in Goldsboro. He is the father of 3 (2 sons and 1 daughter) who enjoys photography, travel and playing guitar/listening to music. He served as District 3 representative prior to joining the Executive Committee.
  • Eliza Ruffner, DVM, of Wilmington is Secretary
  • Shannon Bass, DVM, of Concord will continue to serve on the board as Immediate Past President
    • Dr. Bass is a native Texan who attended Texas A&M University for undergraduate and veterinary school. After graduating with her DVM in 1998, she moved to North Carolina, where she worked as a general practice veterinarian, emergency veterinarian, medical director of a 24-hour emergency and specialty practice, veterinary recruiter, and vice president of medical leadership. She became a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist in 2010. Organized veterinary medicine is something Dr. Bass is passionate about, as we are always better when we are working together. She enjoys participating with NCVMA, AVMA, and VECCS. Outside of work, Dr. Bass enjoys traveling with her husband, two sons, and three-legged Labrador mix. She is an endurance athlete, yoga instructor, and adventurous cook.
